Alpacka has been developing a whitewater boat for several years now and will likely be released soon. Three of us just returned from an amazing trip to New Zealand where we were testing the boat. Some final adjustments being made with hopes of releasing it for the spring runoff. Video and blog write up of our trip.
Cool looks like you had a good time. Beautiful place.
Yeah, I'd be interested in seeing what they develope because the I-K concept (and let's face it: the Alpaca raft is basicly a redesigned I-K) is long over due for an overhaul.
Cool to see what you ran in them, but I'd be a lot more interested in seeing photos of the boat itself. A top view, a side profile, and a viiew of the front of the boat.
Thanks for the comments and concerns. Photos of the boat will be released when the design is finalized, it is still being tested and the improved. These boats come in around 13-14 lbs including the skirt and frame making them very reasonable for backpacking trips. The stern had gotten much bigger in recent design to help form going over backwards. As far as getting edges on inflatable boats, it is very difficult. Anything inflated fabric simply wants to form a circle. Alpacka's boats now allow you to store gear in dry bags inside the tubes giving them a much lower center of gravity and they handle much more like kayaks. The goal is not to replace kayaks, but allow boaters to easily hike in and run remote rivers well. I would be interested in hearing any suggestions for innovative design ideas for the boat.
