Topic: Baller ball stories Posted: 24 May 2010 at 6:48am |
Some of us didn't make it to the ball because we are in china and well.. the flight back would have cost a little too much. But I want to live vicariously through you since finding a boat, gear, people to paddle with, and an undammed river is pretty hard over here. So please post a story, highlight and/or picture so I can have sweet paddling dreams.

Yeah, whatever happened to Operation Aplets and Cotlets? I went to bed and never heard the details... The Rodeo was pretty sweet. Nick Hinds took first in his C-1 conversion. Sick.

I uploaded some ramp pics. They're camera-phone pics so they're not great quality, but still worth a peek.

I know there are a ton of stories about different events, funny things that happened, how big the fire was, who burned the most hair dancing on flaming pallets but really does anyone know how in the world Joe managed to drive his Truck away after those wood missions? Not only are his Brakes and Shocks officially tested, but I have to guess there are a solid couple gallons of beer still drying in his seats.... I know I twisted my shirt out after the first run and filled half a keg cup.

The good news is - since Joe won the GoPro camera in the Big Air competition, all future wood missions can be recorded in full 1080p HD video.

Hey.Thnx Yall for having a great gig for a girl on cruches to attend. I can't yak right now so it was great to have someting kayak related to go to. The hike down to the end of the Icecicle run was fun and dirty. Great sitting on top of the big rock watchin the racers finish. Congrads to all! Thanx for all of the chair offerings, but the cement brick I found by the wood pile worked just fine. Great raffle! And to a great cause!......All of my schwag will be put to good use. Get cast off today but then its a walking cast for 2 months! Woooo Hoooo...............................Sydney

Not a surprise, it was pitch black. I think our raft had the most glow sticks, so as far as the comp goes we won. Am I right or am I right.

What a weekend! Great job and a huge thanks to Adam, Dan, and everyone else who helped make the 2010 PP Ball an excellent success!!! Great Times reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, and lots of river hijinks!
A few recollections from the weekend..
-running lower Icicle for the first time - thanks D1 - METAL!!!!
-standing on a burning pallett with James in the campfire
-Applets & Cotlets - seeing Fish and Dan running the Wenatchee on a large pool toy, rolling in Trinity in the dark and tweaking my shoulder :-(, with Adam chasing what we thought was a raft and three occupants that lost their paddles downstream of the takeout; having to give up and walk out , climbing a barbed wire fence to get back to Hwy 2, catching a ride with a bartender back to the take out; discovering that the "raft and occupants" managed to get out just past the takout out of view of us and were heading back to camp.
-Watching all the great competitions of the weekend
-Great free swag and raffle prizes
-BEER!

I think they were about the same, but I don't have any "official" numbers.
It was a great time overall. Adam and Dan, you guys did an awesome job with the event this year!
Special thanks to Lindsey in particular, though! Her help was indespensible!!
I missed the race and the rodeo while transporting livestock, but I did catch the Ramp "competition" and it was a good time:
Joe, Rob, Connor, and James all had some cool action to throw into the mix. James, you deserve some credit for your creative originality. I was glad to contribute to your idea- I'm sure that if we'd had another shot at it we could have refined it even more!
Night runs:
They really are great. This year's was fun, but it did unravel somewhat. but like an old friend of mine who is a great kayaker/raft guide used to say back in Ohiopyle (and in Costa Rica):
"See the show or Be the Show"
It's easy to be an onlooker on the side lines and be critical of those who allow themselves to get a little wild and crazy.
It can be difficult to blur that line between prudence, saftey, and reckless abandon. But if one is going to do so, it may as well be on the Wenatchee, a river without so much as a single boulder to hit or log to tangle with. Deep enough to confidently flip or swim in, with friendly and forgiveable whitewater features.
Glad I went along though. The only real reason was to keep an eye on things. It was a cold weekend out there, and I would have been much more content curled up in my sleeping bag. Still, once I was on the water it was nice.
I do hope though that those who were involved recognize that it is not cool to leave someone behind, or to act with indifference, or to not act at all. That is the singlemost aspect of today's culture of river runners that dissappoints me greatly. The bar these days seems to be set pretty low because most of you are new to the sport and don't seem to know any better. You all think you are experts prematurely and that you can reinvent the wheel. You can't.
But the brightside is that there is always room for improvement within all of us. That every experience on the river is a building block for future experiences to come. And that we all have the inate abilities we need to deal with difficulties as they arise. we simply need to care about the people we are with.

The only other thing I'd say is that I am extremely bummed to have missed the rodeo! I had hoped that the timing would work out such that I could pull my raft of boyscouts up to the bank and hang out long enough to see my friend the Gentle Giant CRUSH the competition with his one bladed-wonder! way to go Nick, Half the Paddle, Twice da Man!

What Glowsticks? I was right-side-up for at least 70% of that midnight run, and I didn't see any glowsticks in the water

hmm-hope your shuttle woes aren't serious- you off da rio now? did you already knock ut that Selway trip (not sure when your launch was). Dan, you did your part-- the community is full of stories. I'd say the onus is on more of them to cough them up!
Let's here from more of you who were at the Ball! Tell us something funny, amusing, awesome, sketchy, or whatever...
