It depends. Initially, I would ask what appeals to you more, playboating or creekin'. They are both complimentary paddling disciplines and help each other out in the long run, but for starters you should start out doing something that will be more fun that just "practicing technique".
If you have a fav, pick that style of boat. You'll be on class III for a bit, but you'll be learning your boat. Paddle YOUR boat a lot and become familiar with it. Paddle it until you get bored or you feel you've come to the limits of your craft and want to try something more cutting edge.
Good luck! Most modern boats in the last 10 years will all get you down the river. The important thing is being familiar and COMFORTABLE with the boat.
Welcome to whitewater!!!

when i started out, i wasn't into playboating or creeking, since i didn't have the skill for either. i was just into running rivers. if you plan on getting better and making moves on the river (as opposed to floating), then i would recommend a planing hull boat, as your skill will surpass a displacement hull rather quickly.
Good planing hull boats include the Dagger Axiom as a river runner that can surf. If you want a potential cross-over for steeper stuff, then Pyranha Burn.
If you want safe and stable with no huge potential for increased performance with increasing skill, any old displacement hull will do. People seem to like the Dagger RPM, which is basically the displacement hull version of the Axiom.
In the end, it seems best to paddle a bunch of boats and see what you like before you boat.

pyrana inazone was my first, great forgiving play boat. it can surf waves and run rapids. in my opinion a really good beginner boat that has the capabilities to run some class 4. hard edges to learn carving ect.

Wavesport Diesel, great beginner boat with volume and edges, allow you to surf waves and also start to run harder rivers.

Dagger Axiom. It has edges, it is forgiving, the nose has a lot of volume to get you started with easier creeks, and when you get better it will be a great big water boat.
Pyrahna has a similar boat that looks good to.

wavesport diesel, dagger axiom, and the RPM. and hull boats.Well i've continously go down the skykomish river every summer With an Ik.And did split rock to big eddy 4 times in diff. hardshells. umm. went all the way from split to sultan also. i think i am more comfortable with the wavesport diesel. surfing sounds fun. and umm all my past experience is just from the river house in index.
