I surmise from the posts that it is synonymous, or nearly so, with "info." Which while difficult to pronounce and even more difficult to spell than beta, seems a very usable word still.

This leads me to think that "beta" must mean something more, or something less. Or, perhaps is just mo' betta'.

What's the word on this?

Old climbing jargon.  I've used the word for so long I've never even thought twice about someone not knowing the definition.  Makes ya sound cool too.

Apparently it comes from the early days of home video before VHS took over.  If you watched a betamax video of the climb before you did it you had 'BETA".

... preparing for a river beating!

It confused the hell out of me when I first heard it used for "info". I've been a software dev for 30 years, so to me "beta" means something that's not quite ready for general use (usually there's the one really bad bug nobody has found yet). So, I hear "beta" and I think "information that might be OK, but might easily be devastatingly wrong".

Ha Ha! I guess that means that Tyler Bradt DEFINITELY has the Beta on Palousse Falls!  It's not any Beta I want! I'll wait for the movie (again).

Personally, I always thought everyone was talking about the android on Star Trek!

No no.... That's "Data"... "Beta" is his special needs brother who was produced first before they worked the bugs out. They don't like to talk about him.
