I don't know about that... I have seen footage of Tao signing autographs with crowds around him and stuff... I would say it might depend on the location and timing... Events and Comps are probably where it happens most. I would guess its more like can I get a picture with you kind of thing too... I want a photo with Tao... I would even kneel down so he could look taller!

Best Tao line heard and seen on the Wenatchee at 15k

Tao:  "Ladies the river is pretty big and scary out there right now."

One of the ladies I'm boating with that day:  "You want us to lead you down, Tao?"

All in all though he's a decent person once you get around the personna.

Yeah it's a cold thread. let me warm it up. What can I say it's a good topic. I like the Dystopian premise, for starters.

Like CRG, I definitely agree: Gotta be the L Dub for me. It would be a steep bike shuttle, but consider the health benifits. Living at the put-in would be sweet. Here's why it is superior to most of the other picks offered:

1. IMO- one of the finest, funnest creeks of all time.
2. I don't think I could ever outgrow it. The Wenatchee is fun, but it's season is a fraction as long, and even in peak season, It would get boring. Same with Tumwater, although at least you get some big water potential to sh*t your drysuit. It's hard to imagine burning out on the L Dub.
3. Long Season, nearly year round.
4. variety. it has boulder gardens, tons of boofs, plenty of waterfalls, and Spirit Falls. Say no more.
5. it's about as beautiful as any river I've paddled, which is quite a few.
6. No road alongside it, which increases any river's appeal, for me.
7.Like Big water? well personally I'm still too scared to get on the LW above 3.5' I imagine if it's all I paddled I'd eventually be inching the levels upward until I hit my limit.
8.The shuttle is short.
9.Like CRG said, there are plenty of other runs nearby.

I suggest everyone who thinks they deserve to have an opinion on Tao should read his book that just came out, Going Vertical.  After reading his book and running every drop he has, than I think you can judge the man.

I believe Tao has always got a bad rap from the people who should be cheering him on the most...kayakers!!!

In my brief meetings with him I have found him to be very respectful, insightful, and a genuinely considerate person....

SHIt LeAF,

Aren't you the one that always cries about how exclusive paddling groups are (just because they don't want to paddle with you).  Now here you are getting all exclusive and shit. Shit man, all i want to do is paddle with you.  You Are my hero- MAN.  Now that the wack is gone, it is my most humble opinion that you are the best boater in the Norf West.

soon all the chics will want you.  hopefully you will be prepared to give them all a heaping laddle of leaf sauce.

h to the hizzo.

EFL - So many options, and its a stones throw from the farm.

Spokane - Hidden jems of play almost year round

or

Salmon in ID, Riggins Stretch - Amazing for all classes of boaters and options, not to mention great weather, hot springs, clasic side creeks fly fishing, white sandy beaches.  Main, Middle Fork, and Lower offer amazing multi day!

Opal Creek on the Little N Santiam....

Its a rare gem thats not close, not very accessible, and has a short 1+ mile hike in.  Great class IV with the most crystal clear waters.

Great reward for those willing to find it.

I hear the road has snow but is accessible....  maybe a Breitenbush / Opal cr weekend in April.

This is like trying to pick a favorite color.

very well put, Liz!!

well I was afraid I'd come across as a geek, but,, boy am I glad I revived THIS soggy thread!  Nice additions (people's favorites), and while I've been trying to take the high road a little more lately, I'm glad to see the 'ol HUGO sling some sh*t for me.

As far as Tao goes, Hey-- lots of people talk trash about extraordinary individuals for lots of reasons. F*#k 'em!!

Tao has proven himself a very influential figure in the sport of paddling (I WOULD dispute a claim that he is THE most influencial). It's guys like him that help to shape the sport and define where it progresses. My helmet is off to him. He works out (still) and has trained very hard to get to where he has gotten to. And WE ALL HAVE CHARACTER FLAWS. The times I've met him he was a nice guy, even when I sat on his "light layup" Dagger (My brush w/ greatness!)

It's easy to be a piece of plastic driftwood bobbing in the eddy of anonimity. It's NOT easy to be in the limelight in a small sport where everyone is constantly judging you.
