Hey, I will have 4 days in Ecuador as part of a graduation present, jan 11th-15th to do whatever I want, boating is of course high on the list.  Does anyone have contact info for a good paddler / guide down there?  I'd love to do some drop some names and waterfalls.

I really just forgot who to contact, f*cking names...
Thanks,
Gordon

You are looking for the dirtbag tour, my friend. Click on tours and scroll down. Excellent plan for boaters on a budget.

Ok - Gordon, before you graduate, Please, Please, PLEASE learn to spell Ecuador.  Seriously - as a soon to be Alumnus of UPS, you've got to set a better example.

Ok - I'll admit.  You spelled it right in the body of the post, just not the subject line, but you know I never pass up an opportunity to make fun of UPS Graduates...

this outfit is totally different then anyone out there from luxury trip to sleeping in the ditch and going creeking they can help
learn to travel with your boat with some very accomplished paddlers or just come and rent your gear by the day for as little as 25 bucks a day

Here ya go Gordon: Check these guys out-- they are awesome!

In fact, Don and Darcy rolled into town just in time for the Robe Race! They competed despite their lack of familiarity with the run in the face of high flows! Incredibly solid boaters with many years experience.
Here' a little story about Don that always makes me chuckle when I recall it:

I was paddling in Costa Rica a few winters back in the mid 90's, and that's when I met Don. We were running the Reventizon from Turrialba to Peralta one time at floodstage.
Don got stuck in this HUGE hole, not like that sort of stuff seemed to phase him. So he's getting ragdolled in there forever. Window shades, throwing ends, the works. Suddenly I see his bald head shining in the tropical sun as he's locked into the extended rodeo. What happened to his helmet? well the river definitelty sucked it off of his head- that was obvious.
The amazing thing is that when he finally extracted himself, he had his helmet still: The black combing along the helmet's rim had come off, and somehow he'd managed to bite it while he was getting utterly worked. By the time he came out of the hole the combing had come completely off except for about an inch left attached to the helmet. He had the other end of this long leash IN HIS TEETH!

One of the funnier and more amazing things I've seen a paddler pull off!
Don and Darcy, great paddling with you both on Robe last weekend- hope to synch up again while you are in the PNW!!!

Hey Gordon,

This is Darcy from Small World Adventures.  Like Brett said, Ecuador is an awesome place to paddle, and you're going to love it!

You should check out our website www.smallworldadventures.com it's got tons of information about paddling in Ecuador and will be super useful to you whether you decide to do a guided trip or not.  Check out the video page as well if you want to get a feel for the kinds of rivers Ecuador has to offer.
We also wrote the Kayaker's Guide to Ecuador which you can order off our website if you want to "do your homework" before you show up.

Since you have such a short time to paddle, it probably makes sense to do a guided trip, but if you decide you want to do it on your own, let me know and I can give you some advice, rent you a boat, etc...

You should also click the "win" link on our homepage.  We are doing a summer giveaway contest where we'll be giving out a trip to Ecuador, a Jackson Kayak, Werner paddle, IR drytop, Sweet Helmet, Astral pfd, Snap Dragon spray skirts, and more!  So you might just be able to win yourself a free week of kayaking with us in Ecuador--and we run a sweet operation.  Riverside lodge, 60 kayaks to choose from, gourmet chef, cold beers, and hot showers--what more could you want?

Darcy

Thanks Darcy and others for a continued supply of information!  But FYI, my Ecuador trip was 4 months ago!  That being said, I didn't get to paddle there.  So as soon as I get a one of those real world jobs, another trip is in order!

Oops!  Sorry Gordon.

I didn't even look at the date.  Sorry you didn't get to paddle, but I hope you had a great trip anyways.

yeah, I'm partially to blame for revving this thread- I saw a recent post an assumes the whole thing was fresh! Seems like I always do this to one of Gordon's old threads!

Still, I need to get down there myself! maybe next winter...
