This is the annual "I am this hardcore" post.
This year I am ashamed to say that had a paltry 60 days on the river. Lame, but a full 33% of those were personal first descents!
The highlights were kayaking that Selway with a great group and finishing off with the Lochsa. I also had some great trips up to BC, including running put-in falls of Cheakamus and the Mini-mine at an insanely high flow.
I made my first real foray into Class V firing up the Lower 9 of the NF Payette.
Other notable PFDs include:
Upper Wind Breitenbush LNF Santiam (Opal Creek Section) Cooper Soo MF Smith (Cali) NF Smith (Cali)
I also started rock climbing, the highlight being 5 days in Joshua Tree, where I on-sited my first lead trad climb...
This year, I have already boated 5 days with 3 PFDs, including an exploratory of Jefferson Creek! Great start to the new year, and hopefully more to come!
See you on the river.

What exploratory of Jefferson? Did you look at the upper section?

any run i am running for the first time without without someone who has run it before, i deem to be exploratory in nature....
just because someone else has already explored it doesn't mean i can't explore it, too.....
moreover, on-siting the gnar without aid is pretty much on a different level, even if you have some beta....
however, this discussion is reserved for a different thread....so i am going to start a new thread....

I got 65 river days total.
5 PFD's:
Lower 7 NF Payette (cat) Pilchuck Creek (cat) Schyukill (rec kayak) Beckler (raft) Canyon Creek Stilly (IK)
About 30 of my trips were on the Sky....
The highlight trip for my year was R2ing the Green Truss with Fish. I guess you could call Big Brother a PFD for me but I ran everything else with Fish years ago. Other highlights were my 4th time down the MF Salmon, NF Payette, the Grays at huge water, Pilchuck falls in a cat, and running my hometown river in the winter with my good old buddy.
I need more river days and PFDs in 2010!

We didn't get out as much as I would have liked - only 52 times - but got to do some cool stuff. Somewhere between 5-6 personal first descents (depending on how you count them) and other highlights: - PFD, Catboating the Green Truss
- PFD, EF Lewis Waterfall run (cat)
- PFD, Forks of the Kern (cat - hiked in over 2 miles with said cat, was fairly epic - the hike, not the river)
- PFD, Upper Kern (cat - on the low side, super super technical, really fun)
- PFD, Trinity - Burnt Ranch (cat)
- PFD?, Eagle Falls on the Sky (cat, my big one)
- PFD?, A small section of Icicle Creek downstream from where we took out a couple years ago (ran the Ricochet section of Icicle for my 2'nd time)
- Dirty Thirty on the Lochsa at 8.75'
- North Fork Payette (cat - best place ever to spend Labor Day Weekend)
- Our recent Grays trip was definitely notable
I borrowed an IK on the Tieton and had a blast - I'm going to do more IK'ing this year if I can - definitely more days on the river and less chores --Shelly

80days on the Sky in 2009 with 40 others in various places.
Highlights include two swims, several pfds, and a great summer x-country trip w/ family.
Looking forward to a great year of paddling in 2010!

Well let it stand for the record that i did not start this thread- But you asked for it, so here goes...
188 river trips in 158 river days
--Here's how I qulify trips and days:
--1 hr squirt boating on the Powerhouse = 1 trip and 1 day on the river.
--6 laps on FITW = 1 trip, but 2 laps on the Foss followed by a run on the Sky that same day = 2 trips that day.
--5 days on the Selway = 1 trip
42 total rivers run- this number would be higher if I counted individual sections of rivers
19 P.F.D.s
--I don't count sections of rivers as PFDs if I already ran a seperate section of that river. I count the blue line on the map. For example, Ernie's Canyon was a PFD for me this year, but it's not included in my PFD count because in 2006 I ran the class III section upstream of it, and checked off the N. frk Snoq with the understanding that I would eventually return to run Ernie's when I was ready and "complete the PFD". So really my PFD count would be 22 or more if I counted it differently.
47 Class V Trips
35 Class IV Trips
102 Class III Trips (37 of these were commercial raft trips)
4 Class II Trips (I'm displeased at how low this number is, but there's only so much time)
70 Salto (creekboat trips)
43 Diablo (river runner trips)
40 Ezg (playboat trips)
3 Squirtboat sessions or trips
1 Slalom Race in a borrowed slalom boat
4 Private raft trips: R4'd Robe from Put-in to Faceplant, R2'd the Green Truss w/ Fish (but unlike Franz I emphaticly told him I was portaging Big Bro), R2'd Green R. Cleanup with ThrowYaMitts, R2'd the Middle White Salmon with Jed Hawkes
37 Total Commercial Raft Trips (White Salmon + 1 trip on the Deschutes)
2 swim / booty beers (Little White and Robe)
1 Multiday (5 days on the Selway)
3 Night runs (2 Pitch Black on Wenatchee, 1 Full Moon run on White Salmon- Yes I ran Hussum Falls)
Paddled with approximately 222 people, including fellow raft guides but not including livestock.
Now we all know that quality is what counts, not quantity. But I can honestly say that with the exception of maybe 5 trips (which i also enjoyed), I consider all the others quality days spent! Conversly, much of my time off the water in 2009 sucked , so I'm glad to have been able to enjoy the company of all of the vibrant and diverse people I shared my river trips with!

Impressive, JP. After reading your stats it makes me want to keep my own, but the reality is I know I would lose interest and mine would be incomplete. I paddled between 150 and 200 days this year, though.
PFD's include: Robe, Skook, Jefferson, Miller, Foss, Ecuador stuff. Lot's of elf on the Sky this summer (godd business!!) and a great fall/winter so far!!

I didn't count my paddling days, but I had some PFDs that are two of my new favorites: Cooper and Tumwater. For sure have to go back to both of those!

Damn JP, that's impressive!
coolest river I ran this year was Tapeats Creek during the Grand Canyon trip I did lat August. no one wanted to hike their boats up in the 100 degree temps so I did it solo. that gorge is incredible, and a couple of the drops are actually really nice. worth it if anyone finds themselves there!
the little wenatchee was fantastic, I ran my first class V, and barely got my head wet.
Oh, my second grand canyon trip was really cool too

49 trips (not bad for having to drive ~3 hours each way - excluding the Umi). 4 PFDs. Highlights include kicking off the year on a swollen Little Klickitat, some fun summertime Tumwater and Truss weekends, and getting a little more into playboating during the spring. 1 swim on Hagen Gorge. Teakettle Falls put a lickin on me....specifically to my jaw!
This year I hope to boat some more out y'alls way. Would love to check out FITW, Cooper, China Gorge, Little Chee, etc.

There are prolly more and the water just pushed it out of my head:)

You got it, forgot about that one! But, in my defense, I did completely self rescue. I don't think I ever drank a booty for that... The river gods might not be happy

Yeah, I mostly self rescued on both of my swims.
-On the LW I don't even think anyone noticed I swam at all (and IMO that illustrates how poorly people watch out for each other: we are flirting with DEATH more than we realize simply because we are lazy and have bad habits-but that's another thread)
-My swim on Robe was really cool, actually. I climbed up on my boat while surfing in Mrs. Robinson. My feet were dangling in the foam where they found purchase on a rock that bcaks up the hole. I pushed off of it and pulled my boat out of the hole with me. Consequently I let go of my paddle so Rob had to recoover it. Both of my Elbow pads got sucked off, too! So he grabbed those as well.
