Just out of curiosity, how'd you get out from behind the vail? Were you able to get air, etc? Did you flush? Someone told me once that they were able to climb out of it....don't know about that one. Anyways, would appreciate any information.

I stopped filming when all signs of the boat and chip had vanished. I assumed holding a throw bag instead of the camera might be more appropriate.

If you kept filming people would be saying "why didn't ya put down the camera and help?" But NOW it's "Where's the rest of the footage?"
I say "throw bag in one hand, camera in the other." (make sure the camera's in the steadier hand)

Just make sure you don't throw the camera and hold the bag steady... That could piss someone off aeh!

yeah-bummer. Somekind of right-hip english just spun you right into the pocket. Where's the footie of my boof? Man, I just am the invisible boater. Then when people take pics or vid, they hoard it.
Once Chip was on the rope, swinging into the bank I chased Chip's boat through the class IV drop just downstream. Fortunately there is enough flatwater below it to bulldoze a boat into the eddy on R. Right above a longer series of diagonal ledge holes.

I can see it now, camera in one hand, throw bag in the other, cig in mouth and beer stuffed in PFD.

Sounds about perfect!
But hey, filmin' and ropin' don't have to be separate. Check out my vid under, nah I'll just hijack this thread too. The youtube embedding feature is cool!
On a more serious note though, I'd like to hear how you got out too...

uhhh, yeah, dude....i already watched this in another thread, so butt out, I don't want anyone taking away from people's focus on MY swim.......errr, on second thought....
you are right, travis, that's some nice multi-tasking with the rope and camera....turns out, i didn't need a rope at all....i ended up having to swim down the next rapid to my boat, anyway....it was nice to get a scout first, though, so thanks Jed for the good rope skills! Never know when it's going to come back around on you, hahahahahahaha.......

oh yeah...how i got out: Staying relaxed....
if you count, i am upside down for 10 seconds, and that is only the portion videoed when i am still in the boat. after i pulled, I came up in the cave. Without catching a breath, I felt myself sucked back to the curtain, where i got pummeled down to the streambed. Once I peeled my face off a boulder (seriously), I just started grasping rocks and pulling myself downstream, which worked well enough for me to surface downstream of the boil.....

I've been in that cave. I was trapped by my boat- which was getting flipped around and slamming into me- in the far river left corner of the cave (which I think is actually in the center of the falls). Definitely didn't seem feasible to climb out from there, maybe it's possible on the river right side. I can't say I looked around a whole lot. After a few seconds of getting bashed by my boat I just pushed off the back wall as hard as I could with my feet and dove into the curtain. The water pushed me down for what seemed like an eternity, but as soon as I started to come back up I remember feeling ecstatic because I knew I was out. I popped up about 20 feet downstream of the falls, right next to a throw bag!

So, comin from an old man who don't know much, I have to say that this thread clearly illustrates the need to finish one's boof withan aggressive forward stroke....check out JP's finish (nice work JP} as opposed to Chip's...says it all

Yeah, that's often the most important part of the whole boof move and is rarely given much attention.
Nice line jP!

JP only takes the stroke after he re-emerges downstream from the pile. He clearly had enough momentum to drive through to pile. so, while i agree my finish needs vast improvement, i think other factors played a role in my line's dissolution. one key difference I see are the location of the boof stroke: JP got it perfect and I was early . In addition, I agree with JPs assessment that I probably stuck an edge down on the landing. It is true that a strong forward stroke on the landing may correct the edging issue. the other thing i notice is the angle of the paddle shaft in the picture....clearly, i need to get a more vertical paddle on the boof stroke..... in the end, i just wasn't aggressive enough. I tried to be relaxed and not overpower it.... clearly i was too non-chalant. i think a good hard charge and delayed boof stroke will resolve the issue....

Wow, if you replay Chips video over and over from 5 seconds and JP's from 8 seconds its surprising just how similar both landings really were!
It looks to me like JP actually landed just a bit to the left and definitely was helped by the timing of the boof stroke!
I suspect there could be a bit of chaos theory here too, sometimes lady luck wants to show us who's really boss if you ask me.
Very cool comparison, thanks!

I ended up behind the curtain last summer, how long were you back there. You get a lot of time to think and figure out how to get out. There's a vid somewhere of my swim that Dan shot, but my boof was sh*t, and mother nature reminded me to practice.

I agree with Etive...both land with about the same inclination. Might be the azimuth that played a part? A little too much angle to the right, a boil pushes the bow off line, and you end up sideways and headed toward the cave... Not to mention, those are different boats, and different boats resurface differently...
But I'll probably get called out on that one...

There is a difference in horizontal boat angle, and a difference on which side of the crown your boofing from. JP is much more center trending center-left while you are just right of center trending right.
Its hard to tell but upon landing you look to be in a brace for a while too without body motion or momentum... the sun/shade and camera makes it hard to see that part.

thanks everyone for the useful input....lesson: more experience reading water, better line selection, a greater ability to actually hit the line (Lava is tough be sure on), and better stroke technique....lung capacity is fine, though....
