Clearly this is about weekend plans, and the river doesn't always care about our schedules but still, I have a feeling this year is going to be an early melt. So what do you think?

Make note that the Salmon la Sac slalom and downriver events are June 6-7. Like the Ball, might be better to do a different weekend. In addition, even if snowmelt is early, the cooper is likely to be too high for regular folks to run that weekend. The later you do it, the more people will be able to run it under 1200 (I don't care about the flow so much, but like being as inclusive as possible)

Yeah, probably best to have an event when the water level is around 1200. This will allow more people to participate and makes it so the people that come are about having fun vs. running a juicy Cooper. I personally LOVE the Copper from 1500-2000 on the inflow but it is a bit juicy for some aspiring paddlers. I have seen a swim at the slide around 1600+ and we could not get the boat until Norm's. Well, Norm's got the boat for us...
Let's get together and run it when it has some juice in it but then let's all get together again for some lower water fun laps in the sun. Bring the play boat if you want to make it more interesting...

This is not a thread about planning an event. I just want to hear when folks think the inflow will be in this range with the cooper being the primary contributor. To be honest I am not planning an event at all but I do plan to invite folks to join me when I go and that be around a 2k flow for optimal smiles and piles.

7/12? I didn't think anyone would vote for that... How could the coop possibly have 1500 to 2k on the inflow at that time of year... Here's too hoping.

Like 8 years ago it went into AUG but this aint no year like that either... I guess anything can happen... You know the saying after all. April snow showers extend summer cooper hours.

What say you guys about a good progression for running the Cooper? What is a good first-timer level?

1400, IMO a little better padded out. And a better "all inclusive flow for me at least- I'm not sure I'd rally for it at 1200. Then again maybe I'm still not familiar enough w/ the cooper guage but I thought 1200 was boney. Seemed to me that 1400 was a good medium. Not pushy, not too boney.
For example, "The Butt Buster Boof" is a little fluffier for your duff with that extra 200 cfs. Not to mention that the lil' "Boost-A-Boof" in the approach to Norm's is like a delicate, dainty european pastry.
You also get less stern slam boofing the taller ledges with that little bit of extra juice.
As far as which weekends its gonna go off, ect.
Well I just think it is way too early yet for such speculation. A lot can and will happen between now and then, as far as weather patterns go. Lots of back and forth yet.

Im just dreaming about that boof flake above Norm's. I cant wait for Cooper season.
Nothing like sitting in the Eddy below Norm's and then seeing your buddy rise up above the horizon line, disappear and then come flying down the slide.

Shelbers yer so nice... I wanna be your buddy! I was going to say nothing like seeing your buddy bounce off that boof flake with a giant smile just before sliding backwards over that left ledge against the wall ... hahaha Of course I'm kidding

I find that in early melt years China Gorge is out by June 6. if it's to be early melt, then Cooper should be in by then.

Chipper, I would agree. Only on rare years do the two run together on the same weekend too. It usually only happens that China Gorge has a low level and cooper has a high level for a day or two before China drops out and the Cooper becomes the producer. Still for the guessing game, I think that it is going to be either 6/14 or 6/21 JP: while I agree we are to far off to be totally accurate that is the reason for a poll, lets just see if any of us can guess close. Think of it this way, I know you are pretty good amazing at laying tile but if you never laid another piece or showed anyone your work would anyone one else really know? Terrible example, I know. BUT I have a bunch of Tile work coming up at my house and figured I would start laying the compliments on before I call for help!!!!

Drove up to Salmon La Sac yesterday and there is still a ton of snow up there. Thought with all this warm weather we've been having in Ellensburg that we might be able to get in to the Coop early this year. Not yet though! Definitely stoked to get back in there.
Has a Cooper Race been brought to the table yet? Considering the run only takes 10 minutes if you rally at flows around 1500, it would be a pretty sweet venue for a two person team style event. After racing the Wind and with the NWCC and Robe races coming up, racing has been on my mind. Not that I have any intention of winning any of these events, its still cool to see the paddling community gather in the masses. The Cooper would be a sweet, relatively easy, early summer addition to the race series. Any thoughts?

Potter, did you head up the cooper road? I have friends with cabins around the Ronald area and they all snowmobile. They have basically all said that this year the snow was a fraction of years past and they are already driving well past where they would normally go to start sledding. In fact one friend said that normally you can't even drive up the cooper road until late April and up high until mayish. This year they have all been driving well up the cooper road already to start sledding which would suggest the snow levels are already a month or more ahead of an average year. We can hope the weather stays cool and it doesn't all gush down but I have a feeling were looking at a pretty early year...
