Topic: Professor Paddle Ball on Facebook Posted: 15 Jan 2010 at 12:05pm |
This year we are using facebook and possibly other social networking sites to help promote the Professor Paddle Ball. This will give everyone a chance to follow the process and input opinions. The forum here is and will be of course the primary focus group but we wanted to try something new.
The page is up and running with pictures from last year. Stop and take a look, make a comment, become a fan and help spread the word.
Just as a reminder there is a planning meeting monday 1/18, 7pm at 9lb hammer in georgetown. I hope to see lots of people there. If you cant make it and want to have some input or just make a comment, feel free to post it here of on facebook.

Yeah, well, homey don't play facebook. I'm not sure why you want another social networking site to promote a social networking site. Seems redundant. I'd rather hang out with the people I know (and don't know) from this site.
Why does everyone always automaticaly think bigger is better? It usualy isn't. But whatever. suit yourself.

I don't do facebook either, but you know what... I am happy to have anyone put in effort as long as the motive is to benefit the community, and I know that is what is going on here!!!
Just make sure that updates are on both sites to ensure us non-facebookers can stay abreast to the event. Thanks RokMnky and Tizak for the work, I am stoked to be on the sidelines this year!!!

We are posting here first and then to facebook.
This is just an effort at reaching boaters that might not be on here or are but not actively. We just want to help spread the word a little.

Facebook is super-efficient. Not into every new fad, but I love stuff that works. And Leif... you admit that college girls strong-armed you? :)

It's all fun and games until someone loses a paddle.

I for one would like to see a larger pack of misbehaved rabid dogs roaming the campsite this year.

As for facebook, any site that openly sells your personal information and network of contacts for advertising and even tax tracking purposes is a tad crappy. I don't use the site specifically because I know several photographers & artists that were screwed by Facebook when photos and personal work was sold to Getty. Turns out that they even factored in the lawsuit figures and decided it was still profitable.

What is facebook? Is that a book that looks like a face? I am lost here, or I dont spend enough time on the internet, or, I have a life...

Bigger is not always better, JP. However, PP has a reputation for representing only a subset of paddlers. While FB doesn't reach everyone, using it seems like a good way to reach out to the whole community and show that PP really is inclusive... In addition, since the AW/WKC-sponsored riverfest isn't happening this year, seems like PP Ball should step into the void to whatever extent is possible. Of course, members of the planning committee will determine the scope....

While our event is not on the same weekend, we have reached out to Tom O'Keefe to discuss the possibility of working together.
By the way, our event will be 5/22-5/23.

The planning commitee would love suggestions and (gasp) help. At the same time, in the end, we are throwing a party that celibrates what we all (here at least) enjoy and spend a large part of our lives doing. Lets leave it at that. No need to be negative. One way or another, you will have beer, good friends and mother nature permitting: a boatable river. If I fail at this we will drill holes in my playboat as punishment.
